PTSD Awareness Month: Understanding the Signs of Trauma and PTSD

June is PTSD Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding of how trauma can impact mental health and daily life.

Many people associate PTSD with military combat, but post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after many different experiences, including childhood trauma, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, accidents, medical trauma, or other overwhelming life events.

Common PTSD symptoms may include:

• Intrusive memories or flashbacks
• Nightmares and sleep difficulties
• Anxiety and hypervigilance
• Emotional numbness or disconnection
• Irritability and anger
• Avoidance of reminders of the traumatic event
• Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe

Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, and symptoms can look different from person to person. Some individuals struggle with anxiety, panic, relationship difficulties, or intrusive thoughts without realizing that unresolved trauma may be contributing to their distress.

Effective treatments such as EMDR therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and other trauma-focused approaches can help people process traumatic experiences and reduce PTSD symptoms over time.

If you are looking for PTSD therapy, trauma therapy, EMDR therapy, or support for childhood trauma in Burke, Fairfax County, or virtually throughout Virginia, know that help is available.
